Houston Plastic Surgery Updates

Staying in shape (including plastic surgery) can be done together

A recent article highlighted the benefits of working out with your spouse or significant other. According to click 2 Houston

Couples spend a lot of time apart due to work and other responsibilities, fitness instructor Nicole Nichols wrote on SparkPeople.com, and focusing on fitness and one-on-one time is important to any relationship.

Combining quality time with a loved one and a quality workout has many couples hitting the gym, running trails, yoga studios or slopes in tandem. And they are finding the benefits to physical exercise with a romantic partner.

One is that deeper bond that can form.

“Exercise produces chemicals in the brain that evoke feelings of happiness, reduce stress, and also increase arousal and libido,” she wrote. “Several studies show that men and women who exercise regularly report better and more frequent sex with their partners.”

“Funny thing, a lot of couples haven’t really looked at each other in the eye for years; there were giggles and snickering,” he said. “Kind of sad. But it really brings you together as a couple, and then you go out to dinner and talk and relax.”

Dr Eisemann occasionally helps couples who are interested in the same procedure done together on the same day. procedures like liposuction and blepharolplasty can sometimes be scheduled this way. Recovering from plastic surgery together is an experience some find rewarding, because when they are healed they both look better.

Smoking could affect your employment in Texas

According to KHOU.com a bold move is being made by  a Texas hospital.  El Paso’s county hospital won’t hire tobacco users after Oct. 1.

University Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Jim Valenti said the policy was put in place so the hospital, which has already banned smoking on hospital property, could encourage employees to lead healthier lives.

Several hospitals around the country have similar policies, though UMC appears to be the first Texas hospital to make such a move. This bold step gives smokers nother good reason to quit or better yet; not to start.

Dr Eisemann cautions patients who are smokers that they have additional risk with surgery. The risk is present with every surgical procedure;however, abdominoplastyand facelift can be particularly difficult. With both of these procedures there  is tension on the incision and if the skin is weak due to damage from smoking there can be wound complications. The wound could take longer to heal and as a result scarring could be more significant. When patients quit at least 3 weeks prior to surgery and do not smoke 4 weeks after surgery they are less likely to encounter wound healing issues.

Weight loss can improve the condition of the heart

According to  KHOU.com  a Houston man says his heart was failing because of what he was eating, until he met a doctor who helped change his life.

When Brad Goodwin, 68, weighed 204 pounds, he said he had trouble tying his shoes and walking up one flight of stairs.  He said doctors told him his weight was creating life-threatening-heart problems.

Then Goodwin went to see Dr. Lance Gould, a heart specialist at the University of Texas Health Science Center.  Gould said he is all about food and exercise when it comes to staying heart-healthy.

The 72-year-old doctor and his wife said they stay in shape by always scouring labels for low-fat and low-calorie-tasty foods.

“Yeah the labels are really important because [they] tell you what kind of foods to eat,” Gould said.

Gould is leading a study he hopes will one day encourage more doctors to talk to patients about the importance of eating healthy food. One of the main goals is to stop heart disease.

“We can find early vascular years — 10 to 15 before a heart attack and then prevent it and treat it,” he said.

It’s a program that helped Goodwin lose 32 pounds. “People really couldn’t believe the transformation,” he said.

Dr Eisemann consults with patients after they have lost weight. He understands that weight loss is only a small part of the process. Eating right and exercise will be important also. Often times it is necessary to surgically remove the excess skin that is left after weight loss. This can be done with a brachioplasty for the arms, an abdominoplasty for the stomach, and a facelift for the face. These procedures can be combined in some cases.

Every calorie does not translate to weight gain

A recent local article revealed that most of us are calorie oblivious. We have no clue as to how much food we need to consume daily to maintain, lose, or gain weight. A study revealed that 63% can’t estimate the number they need per day, 23% don’t want to even take a guess, and only 12% know how many they need to consume. A small woman needs 1,400 to 1,600 a day but an athlete needs about 4,000. For those watching their calories or sticking to a set diet they should be aware that they need to factor in calories from beverages as well.

Maintaining a preferred weight is difficult for men and women alike. Men often chose to gain muscle over simply loosing weight. Many men exercise and lift weights but can’t seem to add the muscles they would like to in the pecs, buttocks, or the calf muscles. Dr. Eisemann offers pectoral implants, buttock implants, and calf implants in Houston to correct this problem.  Some men simply do not have the genetic makeup to have increased muscles. By choosing implants muscles can instantly be enlarged in a safe, effective, and natural looking way.

C-sections should be a last resort even if the patient has had one previously

According to a recent local article most women who have had c-sections and many who have had two should be able to try labor with their next baby. 15 years ago 3 in 10 women who had prior c-sections gave birth vaginally.  Today fewer than one in ten of former c-section mothers have a vaginal birth. VBAC is know as vaginal birth after cesarean. C-sections are a third of all pregnancies and come with many risks.

The questions most people have about c-sections are all about scarring. Dr. Eisemann often gets asked the same question about the scarring from abdominoplasty or a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck can correct loose muscles, extra skin, and even stretch marks.  Excess fat and skin are removed from the upper and lower abdomen. This surgery is great for those who have reduced their weight or had multiple preganancies. The incision is made from hipbone to hipbone in the lower abdomen. The scar softens and flattens over the course of several months and sits low enough to be covered by underwear or a bathing suit.

New guidelines for mammograms

A recent local article revealed that there are new guidelines for mammograms. The United States Department of Health and Human Services is requiring health plans to cover preventative services. This would include mammography at the age of 40. There would be no co payments, no co insurance, and no deductibles when offered by a network provider.

For women who have overcome breast cancer Dr. Eisemann offers breast reconstruction surgery. An immediate or delayed reconstruction can be performed. Saline breast implants or tissue flaps can be used to create the breast. The nipple and areola are constructed either by tattooing, skin graft, or skin fat. In addition to reconstruction breast augmentation, lifts, and reduction are also popular procedures. Breast reduction corrects large heavy breast while breast augmentation, also known as breast implants enlarges the breast to a desired size. Lastly, breast lifts can be combined with breast implants or a reduction to raise the breast and create a more shapely and youthful appearance.

Antibiotics need a prescription in Mexico

Mexico has enacted a new law in that starts on Aug 25th for antibiotics. According to a recent local article all antibiotics will require a prescription. This will not only affect Mexican residents but medical tourists as well. Many people travel to Mexico from the United States to get medications over the counter that require a prescription here. This will affect people on both sides of the border. There has been a spike in sales before the rule officially applies. The crackdown came about to control drug resistant bacteria strains. Many people in Mexico were taking antibiotics when they didn’t need them or taking them when they should have seen a Dr. The new rule shouldn’t have a large affect as it is easier and cheaper to get a Dr.’s appointment in Mexico than it is here.

Dr. Eisemann’s patients who have undergone a breast augmentation should have antibiotics for teeth cleaning procedures. This is due to the fact that they may develop an infection which could attack the implant. While the chance of an infection is small and having implants does not increase the risk it would simply be more problematic if an infection occurred. The patient should share the fact that they have breast implants with their dentist who can prescribe antibiotics prior to the procedure
